MOB MUSEUM
"Marlon Brando’s breakout role as Terry Malloy in the 1954 film On the Waterfront tells the story of a young dockworker who discovers he is being used by the Mob for their dock-related operations.

The movie was a fictional drama, but its story was based on actual events, which inspired author Neil G. Clark to spend five years researching the history of the underworld’s control over New York City’s waterfront.

Clark’s new book, Dock Boss: Eddie McGrath and the West Side Waterfront, focuses on the story of Irish Mob boss McGrath and other hoodlums who ruled the West Side docks from the 1930s through the 1950s, encompassing nearly 900 piers and more than 300 miles of active international commerce and trade.

Neil G. Clark will bring the Mob-ruled world of the New York West Side waterfront to life. Learn about:
• New York City’s Irish Mob after Prohibition and its underworld alliance with the Italian Mafia
• The gangs, racketeers, and corrupt union officials who maintained iron-fisted control over the busiest port in the world
• A sensational murder trial that forever transformed the waterfront by bringing a nationwide network of labor racketeers to light
• New details about a 1930s gang war that resulted in 11 murders, six near-killings and dozens of shootings

A book signing will follow this program. Please join us after the book signing for drinks in The Underground speakeasy with author Neil G. Clark."

  • "Not since On the Waterfront has the world of labor racketeering been presented in such an enlightening and entertaining way. Neil G. Clark presents a fascinating portrait of Eddie McGrath and his waterfront minions, dock wallopers and hoodlums with names like Mutt, Cockeye, Squint, and the Bull. Dock Boss is essential reading for anyone with an interest in organized crime history, the sociology of New York's West Side, or the long, lost universe of the waterfront rackets, through which gangsters once held sway over the economic fortunes of an entire generation of working men."
T.J. English, author of the Irish Mob Trilogy (The WestiesPaddy Whacked and Where the Bodies Were Buried)
  • "Dock Boss is a fascinating and well-researched look at one of the most influential Irish mobsters of the 20th century. Eddie McGrath was not only the king of the New York waterfront, but a street-smart Irish mobster who stayed one step ahead of the law and his enemies. Neil G. Clark brings to life McGrath's story with clear prose and a sharp eye for detail."
    - Scott M. Deitche, author of Cigar City Mafia: The Complete History of the Tampa Underworld and Garden State Gangland: The Rise of the Mob in New Jersey
  • "In his new book, Dock Boss, author Neil G. Clark takes his readers inside the violent world of the New York City waterfront and the man who controlled it. It isn't a pretty world, but it was Eddie McGrath's world. It's a story that needed telling and one you don't want to miss."
    - Dennis N. Griffin, author of Cullotta: The Life of a Chicago Criminal, Las Vegas Mobster, and Government Witness and Surviving the Mob: A Street Soldier's Life Inside the Gambino Crime Family
  • "True crime history fans will find Dock Boss: Eddie McGrath and the West Side Waterfront a gripping saga of organized crime that combines the biography of Eddie McGrath with the rise of mob activities in the 1930s. The story reads with the drama and action of fiction, but all events come from real life."
    Midwest Book Review
  • "[...] a thrilling read about a dock boss who pulled strings from the shadows, avoiding the limelight -- and would have been only a footnote in the annals of gangster lore if not for Clark's masterful exposé."

Racketeers like Eddie McGrath, John (Cockeye) Dunn, Andrew (Squint) Sheridan, Albert Ackalitis, Mickey Bowers, Charlie Yanowsky and Timothy O'Mara held important positions on the waterfront, including jobs within the International Longshoremen's Association and the American Federation of Labor. While the gangsters attempted to convey to the public that they were now reformed union leaders, a history of violence had propelled them into their roles on the docks.

Below are original copies of their criminal records:

<![CDATA[West side waterfront gang maps]]>Tue, 28 Feb 2017 17:47:50 GMThttp://neilgclark.com/news/west-side-waterfront-gang-maps
  • Lawyers Trust Company Building/AFL Local 21510 Offices (255 West 14th Street)- An office building that housed professionals, businessmen, and the Dunn-McGrath Mob. Located in the same building were the personal offices of Joseph P. Ryan- the leader of the International Longshoremen Association.
  • Pappa's Restaurant (West 14th Street and 8th Avenue)- Located across the street from the gang's union office, it was a favorite eatery for the mobsters.
  • Edward Gaffney's Apartment (West 13th Street and 7th Avenue)- The home of gang member Eddie Gaffney. Besides being his residence, the daily accounting for the gang's massive numbers operation was completed at the apartment.
  • West Street Bar and Grill (West Street between 10th Avenue and Charles Street)- Owned by gang member Sonny Thompson, the tavern was located in the heart of the mob's waterfront territory. Gang organizer Connie Noonan could be found there every morning passing on orders from John "Cockeye" Dunn and Eddie McGrath.
  • ILA Offices (181 Christopher Street)- One of the original ILA offices where the gang operated after they were granted their first ILA charter.
  • Varick Enterprises (99 Hudson Street)- The pop-up office that housed the gang's collection business. To an outsider it appeared to be a legitimate business, but inside dirty deals were being done daily.
  • Pier 74- Timothy O'Mara was not an employee of any shipping company on Pier 74, but he had an office on the dock where he worked as an "unofficial labor consultant.”
  • Loewer's Brewery (West 34th Street and 12th Avenue)- Following Prohibition, O'Mara maintained an interest in a number of breweries, including Loewer's.
  • Timothy O'Mara's Apartment (441 West 29th Street)- Prior to moving to New Jersey in the 1950s, O'Mara resided only blocks away from his West Side rackets.
  • West End Beer Distribution Company (West 23rd Street and 11th Avenue)- Another brewery that O'Mara had an interest in. The business was managed by his closest associate, John "Whitey" Munson, and thieves would frequently visit to peddle their stolen goods to O'Mara. Also, O'Mara kept his prized racing pigeons on the roof.
  • ILA Local 824 (644 12th Avenue)- The ILA Local that the gang controlled for decades. With gang members John Keefe as Vice-President and Harold Bowers as Secretary-Treasurer, the union offices became the hoodlums unofficial headquarters.
  • Allied Stevedoring (Pier 88)- The gangs stevedoring company that controlled all the loading concessions from Pier 84 to Pier 92. Gang member John Ward was the President of the company, while Mickey Bowers was on the payroll as an officer.
  • Viaduct Bar and Grill (608 West 47th Street)- The gang's watering hole of choice. Although strategically located near their illegal enterprises, according to one gang member they chose to hang out there because the place "[...] had good food and sandwiches."
  • Tate's Storage- Located next door to the Viaduct, gang enforcer John "Apples" Applegate kept a pigeon coop on the roof that secretly concealed the gang’s cache of weaponry.
  • John Applegate's Apartment (437 West 44th Street)- Although most of the gang members relocated to larger homes in Queens, Applegate maintained an apartment in the neighborhood that the mobsters used as a meeting place.
  • Hudson Hofbrau (West 44th Street and 12th Avenue)- The headquarters of Edmund Leahy and John Clinton, two of biggest loansharks on the West Side piers.

<![CDATA[On this day in 1941...]]>Wed, 08 Feb 2017 00:30:47 GMThttp://neilgclark.com/news/on-this-day-in-1941
Although the West Side waterfront was known for bloodshed and senseless killings, the night of February 7, 1941 would prove to be an exceptionally busy day for the volatile neighborhood gangsters.

At 9:30 pm, Joseph Moran, a warehouse checker who had been speaking up about his concerns with John “Cockeye” Dunn and Eddie McGrath`s leadership over AFL Local 21510, was unloading a truck with three co-workers at 508 West 14th Street.

As Moran and the others hauled crates of cocoa, a new model car pulled up near them. The gang’s hitman of choice, Andrew “Squint” Sheridan, hopped out of the passenger seat of the vehicle and walked up to the group. Given his poor eyesight, Sheridan wanted to make sure that he had the right target. “Which of you is Joe Moran?” he asked.

Moran, who was standing only feet away, responded, “Me.” Sheridan drew a pistol from his pocket and shot Moran once in the forehead. Casually stepping forward, he proceeded to shoot Moran twice more in the chest before slowly walking back to his getaway car. The other platform workers who witnessed the killing were understandably tongue-tied when later questioned by police.

When the newspapermen descended on Moran’s home to get the scoop, they found his inconsolable wife clutching their newborn baby. She stressed that her husband had not been involved in any waterfront feuds and had no enemies.

Moran had talked too loud about the Dunn-McGrath Mob and was another casualty of their heavy-handed rule over the waterfront.
The eyes of a near-sighted killer— Andrew "Squint" Sheridan

In an unrelated murder, and only an hour before Joseph Moran was shot, Emil “The Polack” Nizich would meet a similar fate just up the block. Tit-for-tat killings had dominated the Hell’s Kitchen waterfront throughout 1940, and four would-be gang bosses had recently been slain during the fight for control of the Midtown piers.

On January 25, 1941, Nizich, a well-known local hoodlum, was shot in the shoulder while getting a shoe shine, and his companion, Thomas Cunniff, was killed. The two, who had also been previously shot and wounded together in 1937, had been heavily involved in the year’s recent violence.

The killer of Cuniff, who obviously still had unfinished business after the January shooting, caught up with Nizich on 48th Street while he was walking to a neighborhood basketball game. The gunman pumped a few bullets into Nizich’s back, who then collapsed in the road and was struck by an oncoming car. After the shooter was sure Nizich was dead, he jumped onto the running board of a taxi cab and yelled for the driver to “Drive like hell!”

Bowers Mob gunman Daniel St. John was later arrested for the murder but released due to lack of evidence.
